Athletics Season 1 Begins August 31, 2020

By

Last week the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) announced guidance for restarting athletics participation during the time that schools are in a comprehensive distance learning model.  The OSAA has declared that August 31 to December 27 will be referred to as “Season 1” and that sports and activities can occur during this time, provided that teams adhere to OHA guidance.  The OHA has provided detailed guidance for the reopening of K-12 school sports during this time that specifies what teams can — and cannot — do, and that provides all necessary safety protocols.  Utilizing this guidance, Sherwood School District has divided Season 1 into three distinct sessions to allow our student athletes to participate while also successfully completing their academic work during distance learning.  These sessions are as follows:

  • Season 1A — Spring Sports: August 31-October 9
  • Season 1B — Fall Sports: October 10-November 20
  • Season 1C — Winter Sports: November 21-December 27

During each of these six week sessions, teams will conduct two weeks that consist only of practice, followed by four weeks that can include scrimmaging and competition.  Sports that have medium-to-full contact have additional rules, which do not allow for contact and/or competition.  The complete OHA guidance can be found here, and the OSAA guidelines can be found here.  Beginning Monday, August 31, spring sports (baseball, softball, tennis, golf, lacrosse) can begin to practice on our facilities.  Until we complete building the Season 1 practice schedule, our facilities will remain closed to rental by outside groups.
